Chapter 13
Jaylen
Today, is my graduation. Aniyla would be graduating in three more semesters, although, we started college at the same time. Aniyla was only able to take one, sometimes, two classes a semester when Aiden was a baby and first diagnosed. Now that he’s better, she is making up for lost time by pilling up on classes. I swear she should be burnt out right now, but shit, she is my superwoman.
The closer they got to my name, the more nervous I became, and not because I was graduating, but because of what I was about to do a few months after graduation. And, it may hurt the people I love the most. Yet, I had to go and do it. I didn’t want to regret not going, just to protect my family’s feeling about me leaving, because as the years went on, I might began to resent them if I never follow my dreams because I am trying to protect their feelings. I looked out towards the audience and my nerves washed away when I saw Aiden sitting on Aniyla’s lap, surrounded by our family and friends.
It was now time for my row to stand up and walk towards the stairs. The row in front of mines was more than half way done. I fixed my sash that had the African flag colors on them and the other one that let everyone know I was graduating with a 4.25 g.p.a.
“Jaylen Keivon Ellis, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts in Engineering and Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering.” One of the teachers announced, as I walked across the stage.
I could hear my family’s voices screaming over everybody else’s, as I shook the dean’s hand and got my diploma. It took damn near two hours for them to call the rest of the names, and a nigga was tired as fuck of sitting in this hard ass chair.
“Congratulations, to the graduating class of 2021,” the Dean of Students said, as everyone, except for me and a few others, stood up and threw their caps in the air.
I had almost made it to Aniyla and the rest of my family when something told me to look to the left. When I looked, I could see my fifteen-year old sister, Malaysia, my little cousins Sasha, Cashlyn, Oreianna, and the twins, Skyla and Jayla, surrounded by a group of boys.
“Don’t go over there embarrassing them.” Aniyla said to me, as she put her hand in front of me, trying to stop me from going over there.
“Malaysia, y’all better bring y’all asses over here.” I said, loud enough for her and the people she was with to hear me. I had enough base in my voice to scare them lil’ punks they were with.
“Dad already knows where I’m at and who I’m with.” Malaysia had the nerve to say to me, as she went back to talking to those little niggas.
I wanted to go over there and pop her in the mouth. Sometimes, I forgot my little sister is a sophomore in high school.
